The research projects within the Parasitology Division focus on two main areas, immunopathogenesis and parasite control. Recently individual enzyme components of the Haemonchus antigen complexes have been expressed in eukaryotic systems and one has shown modest protection against challenge infection. Expressed sequence tag analysis of components of the sheep scab mite has identified up to 7 allergens which may be associated with mite pathogenesis. A robust model of Neosporosis has been established in cattle and this will be used to compare the rates of vertical transmission of N. caninum in cattle exposed to infection during different periods of gestation. An in depth investigation into the prevalence of nematodes that are resistant to anthelmintics has been completed on sheep farms in Scotland. Overall about 60 per cent of farms harboured nematodes resistant to benzimidazoles and in some regions this was as high as 90 per cent.
