Profitable and Sustainable Agriculture: Animals
Review of Progress in RERAD Programme 2
Review Day
Friday 11 April 2008

The Scottish Government Rural and Environment Research and Analysis Directorate (RERAD) published its Research Strategy ‘Strategic Research for SEERAD 2005-2010: Environment, Biology and Agriculture’ in January 2005 and set out a series of important changes in the approach to commissioning Government funded research in Scotland.

From April 2006 the funding no longer directly supported the Main Research Providers (MRPs) to carry out an agreed set of discrete projects but moved to funding 22 policy focused Work Packages, grouped into 4 inter-related Programmes of Research.

Programme 2, “Profitable and Sustainable Agriculture – Animals”, was jointly commissioned between four Main Research Providers (MRPs), Moredun, SAC, MLURI and BioSS. The strategic aim of this Programme is to help Scottish livestock enterprises deliver high quality primary food products derived from animals that optimise benefits for human health and are produced in systems that promote the health and welfare of animals and enhance the environment.

In its first two years Programme 2 has delivered high quality research and demonstrated that it is successfully integrating the RERAD funded work across the constituent MRPs. The research has already made headway in addressing the three relevant Programme Objectives through research conducted in 5 distinct Work Packages:

The Programme has also successfully identified and developed areas relevant to the three cross-cutting themes: 1. Responding to Climate Change; 2. Protecting Biodiversity; 3. Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability of Rural Scotland.

We hope that this Review will allow us to engage strongly with all stakeholders in communicating the outputs of our research.
